You are here... The Thomson & Page Story / Our History

When Thomson & Page was opened by partners Melvin Thomson and Lawrence Page in 1929, the store sold only electrical and home appliances. During the Depression of the 1930s, times were hard and Page left the company. Ron Wilson (current owners Knauer and Cleggs' grandfather) joined as a silent partner. He was an excellent handyman and his skills were of great use in the appliance repair area.

By the late 1950s, Thomson & Page had expanded into selling sheet music, records, televisions and record players. They were well-known for our music listening booths and their wide selection of LPs and singles. However, it was only in the early 1960s that the company moved into selling furniture.

In 1975, Mel Thomson decided to retire and sold his share of the business to Jim and Peggy Knauer who then owned 100 per cent of the business. Peggy Knauer had a flair for design (she chose all the home accessories) and the two soon opened B.C.'s first Furniture Gallery, replacing the more conventional "rows and rows of sofas and chairs, punctuated by blocks of washing machines or TVs" with "vignettes to display the furniture in a typical at home setting." The gallery was a success and it was decided to gradually phase out the sale of appliances and electronics in order to concentrate on home furnishings and accessories. Jim's excellent business skills and easy-going personality helped form many of the relationships with customers and suppliers that still exist today.

Siblings and current co-owners, Jeff Knauer and Lauren Clegg, took over the business from their parents in 1997, and have since introduced a custom order business.

In 1999 Thomson & Page moved from its 70-year location on Granville Street to its new, modern showroom in Kerrisdale, where they expect to continue serving the Vancouver and B.C. market with only the best furniture, furnishings and home accessories.
